I gave up on this. So much messing around.
Currently, my technique is to run an XP VM on the server, and then remote desktop to it to use it like a terminal server.
If the VM is also on the domain, then folder redirection and everything makes working with files so easy.
I'm currently installing visual studio 2019, and going to give it a test. But I never think they are as good as VB6. Older software really is better.

My Win 10 solution was…
1) Install vb6 (will hang at the back end)
2) re-install vb6 from the same source (untick selections and proceed)
3) install vb6sp6B
Done.

I like the video. i did 2 of the steps the helped me complete the installation. 1. drop the UAC, 2. re-install VB6 studio custom, and uncheck everything and complete. … then VB6SP6 install completed successfully, and components common controls went from versiion 2 to 6 – thank you!!

I found the Visual Studio 6.0 Installer no longer works in the VB6 installation. I found it is better to install from the original "Setup.exe" file (run as administrator) found in your source folder (or better still on your CD in the CD drive). The Installlation of VB6 always failed if I installed via the VS6 Installer button "Install Visual Basic 6 Pro" button because it then insists on installing the service pack (via a checkbox which you cannot leave unchecked) and baulks when it finds a "later version" in your system (goodness knows how it finds that since I have not installed it anywhere that I know of). Installing via the CD however produces steps as showing in the video.. So using the VS6 Installer now is a waste of time. Install from your source drives for VB6 and run the executable for the Service Pack 6, doing all this external to the VS6 Installer
The important things (found in this video) are the registering of the amended registry key using the Key.Reg file created from the "Key.dat" file (duly amended) and the transfer of the DLL files. One thing not mentioned in the video is that in the settings during setup of the VB6 program, you must deselect the ADO,RDS and OLE DB drivers to prevent their installation, as well as deselecting the Jet Drivers (all incompatible under W10)…..Leave the other drivers checked…. If this step with drivers is not followed the installation will fail…

I too think the video goes far too fat. Play it at 0.75 speed improves things).

One final point, if you have failed at installation previously, you should ensure previous files and settings are completely removed.

http://www.danbrust.net blog provided info on which files to remove, as follows:
Delete the installation folders for any Visual Studio products. Note that the following are the default locations; the actual locations may be different on your system if you did a custom installation
or if you are on a 64-Bit computer:
Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio
Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSDesigners98
Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSDN
Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVS98
Program FilesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWizards98

Delete the installation folders for any MSDN Libraries (the previous step may have deleted these if they were installed to the default location). The default folders are as follows:
Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN98 (for the MSDN Library for Visual Studio 6.0)
Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN (for the MSDN Quarterly Library releases)

Use Regedit.exe to delete the following Registry keys if they exist:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftDevStudio
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftMSVSDG
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftHTML Help Collections
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftVisual Basic6.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftVisual Component Manager
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftVisual Modeler
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftVisualStudio6.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftDevStudio
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftMSVSDG
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftVisual Basic6.0
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftVisual Modeler
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftVisualFoxPro
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftVisualStudio6.0

If you’re on a 64-Bit system, check here, as well:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftDevStudio
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftMSVSDG
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftHTML Help Collections
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Basic6.0
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Component Manager
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Modeler
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisualStudio6.0

Use Regedit.exe to delete any instance of the key for Visual Studio or MSDN Library under the following keys. Since you don’t have an uninstaller, you probably won’t find anything here. It’s worth looking through the keys, anyway, to see if you find any mentions of Visual Studio or MSDN. WARNING: Do not delete the “Uninstall” key; only delete MSDN or Visual Studio keys listed within it.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall
64-Bit systems only: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall

I actually created a batch file to do this. Copy the following lines into a text file and save it as "ZapVB6andVB8.bat"
The lines in the batch files are as follows:

@echo off
if exist "c:program filesMicrosoft Visual Studio" rmdir "c:program filesMicrosoft Visual Studio"
if exist "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSDesigner98" rmdir "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSDesigner98"
if exist "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedMSDN" rmdir Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN98"
if exist "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVS98" rmdir "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedVS98"
if exist "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWizards98" rmdir "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWizards98"
if exist "Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN98" rmdir "c:program filesCommon FilesMicrosoft SharedWizards98"
if exist "Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN" rmdir "Program FilesMicrosoft Visual StudioMSDN"
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftDevStudio" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftMSVSDG" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftHTML Help Collections" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Basic6.0" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Component Manager" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Modeler" /f
REG DELETE "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftVisual Studio6.0" /f
pause

This covers every required deletion except those two mentioned in the "Uninstall" key. You will need to do this manually (remembering NOT to delete the actual "Uninstall" key, only the applicable
values (if found) in the key. I did not find any.

I just thought I would mention these things in case others are experiencing the same problem trying to use the VS6 Installer.

I was able to successfully install Visual Studio 6.0 with the help of this tutorial. It's January 2020 and I'm from Brazil.

Service Pack 6 for VS (not VB), was also possible to install successfully.

Note that the video shows a whole procedure for Visual Basic 6.0, so some adaptations were necessary. There are fewer errors with Visual Studio 6.0, because some Register Key, are already created by the installer for example. The adjustment of the "msjava.dll" file is also not necessary for VS 6.0.

My settings and tips:

– Microsoft Windows 10 Enterprise, version 1903

– I also have installed on the same PC the MS Visual Studio 2019. Maybe that's why the folder "1033" appeared to me, inside the folder "common", or this small difference in the path, is really a feature of the VS installation.

Note: VS 2019 opened and worked slowly, when used together with VS 6.0 SP6.

– Download Visual Studio 6.0 Enterprise from https://winworldpc.com/product/microsoft-visual-bas/60 . I used the first option. I only found out that it was the VS and not the VB during the installation.

– I used the "Product's ID number" : 111-1111111

– Download the "Visual Studio 6.0 Installer wizard v.5.0 (setup)" from http://nuke.vbcorner.net/ (register and get the program)

– Download "Service Pack 6 for Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++ 6.0 with Visual Source Safe 6.0d" from : https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=9183

– A lot of attention to the name of the Service Pack 6 files, because the difference between them is very subtle. Visual Basic 6.0 (vb6sp6) and Visual Studio 6.0 – my case (vs6sp6)

thanks a lot for the tutorial
